Dave tells SPIN about the upcoming tour
Dave unveiled a few nice details about the upcoming tour to SPIN magazine. Anton’s involved with the stage design again, and there’s already a contender for opening song. Read an excerpt from the interview below.
According to singer Dave Gahan, the tour’s staging is being co-designed by famed photographer and filmmaker Anton Corbijn, and it will be as moody as the band’s music. “Some of the drawings I’ve seen Anton and our stage crew working on, there’s going to be a lot of light and shade and mood,” he tells SPIN.com. Gahan also leaks the fact that the group is considering using Universe track “In Chains” to open every show. “There’s something about that song that’s really about how the album unfolds… it’s very filmic.”

I really hope they a do a stage show as good as SOFAD…that was amzing…PTA was ok, but nothing special..I know it’s about the music…but these days you need an all round show..esp if you’re at the back and can’t see them on stage!!!
February 21st, 2009 at 14:47
Devo stage was amazing. Since then all stages were mundane, PTA was interesting again, after 13 years.
Also, Christian is a world class drummer and he brings a lot of punch to the old songs. Just listen Everything Counts and Walking in my Shoes from Milan!

starting to take those reviews about this new DM album being incredible pretty seriously
February 21st, 2009 at 17:37
its good!! please!! depeche mode come to lima!!
February 21st, 2009 at 19:28
Just listened to WRONG.
DISAPPOINTMENT!!!
February 21st, 2009 at 21:11

stop whinging that they aren’t coming to your city at least they are coming to your country, I would travel to any city in Australia to see them, surely there is a city nearby you could travel not far to. be thankful they are gracing your country!!
February 22nd, 2009 at 2:21
Don’t ever expect SOFAD style again. That tour was apparently very expensive much “thanks” to the (awesome) stage design.
February 22nd, 2009 at 2:23
Okay..the new song/performance from the echo awards is all over Youtube…AMAZING!!! Lyp synced or not, its moody, dark and just amazing! Cant wait for the show and album!
February 22nd, 2009 at 3:56
Just seen the premier of Wrong on TV…fookin awesome..Retro Mode…
February 22nd, 2009 at 3:57
the new single “wrong” was not impressive at all. It was quite disappointing actually when you consider how much hype was put into it.
Depeche Mode hit their peak from 87-93, they have released some nice singles since Alan Wilder left though.
February 22nd, 2009 at 6:01
Okay, WRONG kicks major ass! Loved it on the first listen and each subsequent listen got better. I’m surprised some people don’t like it. It reminds me of a mix of sound between SOFAD and Black Celebration. Industrial. Hard. Excellent.
February 22nd, 2009 at 6:04
People always talked of the next Violator…but we could possibly be looking at the next Black Celebration? The stage design certainly reflects it, along with the music and album art.
February 22nd, 2009 at 6:32
AndyD421, that is a really good point. There is a lot of Stripped in this song. GOD DAMN the fact that they can still do this is just incredible. The part when Martin and Dave sing together in the middle is fabulous. I’ve listened to it about 30 times now. I hope it doesn’t get taken off youtube.
February 22nd, 2009 at 7:43
What? Wrong on TV and on Youtube?
oh my God! I missed that. Let me go and check it out right F** now before youtube removes it like other times before.
wait for my reaction please : )
February 22nd, 2009 at 10:54
“Wrong” reminds me of “I feel you” and “John the Revelator” in terms of its intensity, though I think “Wrong” could’ve been better if it shared the more visceral arrangement of these other two tracks. Not sure the somewhat unmelodic synths match the vocals. Perhaps Martin’s well chronicled obsession with vintage synths during the production of this album has gone too far. That said, it’s still a great song. I just have a very high standard for the greatest band in history.
February 22nd, 2009 at 12:13
It just takes some getting used to. At first I was thinking…WTF. How many times is Dave going to say “wrong”? But then it grew on me.
Listen to the new U2 single, then listen to Wrong again. You’ll instantly love it
February 22nd, 2009 at 13:39
I liked the performance, I think that they will be in great shape for the next coming tour, and this song Wrong sounds preaty good. I just hope that the other singles that they are planning to release are a little catchier thant this one, but I do like the dark mood on the song. and the vocals sound amazing!
February 22nd, 2009 at 15:47
What happened to these people saying that WRONG is fucking amazing? This song can’t actually be what it is. It is embarassing for these guys who wrote “Enjoy the Silence”, “Policy Of Truth” or even “Stripped”. It does not stand out as a single to me, and it is mind-boggling on how something very inferior to “Precious” could be put as a first single. Hype Hype Hype. Apart from the usual fan base that will think it kicks ass, the most part of us will hate this song. I think DM got the wrong way again - with Ben Hillier - going for 30 year old synths will make this album sound really aged and embarassing. Again, an album hard to digest, but this proves Alan Wilder’s point: “Depeche Mode is now Martin Gore solo with Dave Gahan singing.”
February 22nd, 2009 at 15:58
WRONG track replay gain from the single: -12.94.
Fuck… almost -13.00dB? That is on par with Oasis albums.
February 22nd, 2009 at 16:11
KeenMan, there is an easy solution to the problems you are finding with depeche mode - stop listening to them. Please don’t criticize our taste in music. If you don’t like the song just don’t listen to it. don’t buy SOTU. I’m not sure with such an easy solution you are getting so annoyed
February 22nd, 2009 at 17:08
KeenMan, you’re obviously one of those ‘bring back Alan’ people who won’t stop whingeing because their beloved Alan lef the band (I do like the ALan sound by the way). Well, get over it. If you don’t like DM now, stop listening. Even more importantly, stop leaving comments making scathing attacks on DM, because it makes you look like a sad old git. Besides, you obviously have not heard the last crop of UK electro pop bands, because “going for 30 year old synths” is exactly what everyone is doing now.. Please get a life
February 22nd, 2009 at 17:16
Keeman, all i’m saying is i don’t like it when people make reviews out of other people’s reviews. I personally think the song is great. I get tired of hearing about the good ole days. A band evolves and I really think that if a band goes into the studio trying to make music for the sole purpose of selling 10 million albums, instead of putting together quality work that reflects the current state of the band, the music turns into garbage. A PERFECT example is U2’s POP album. At nearly 50 years old i’m betting they find it difficult to put together music that is dance music for 15 year olds.
February 22nd, 2009 at 18:09
Wrong is the best single they have put out since It´s no good.
I´m not sure what you expect but for me this is so so so good..
February 22nd, 2009 at 18:33
this is the best band in the universe !!! the people who dont like them get on other bands forums. keen man go listen to oasis probably from that 20 mil oasis albumus you ‘v got 1 milion
February 22nd, 2009 at 18:42
Well OK. Perhaps Wrong isn’t a ‘perfect’ radio friendly single (if Depeche ever had one).
If you want more DOITYOURSELF; get a sequencer and ROCK’N'ROLL! It’s easy.
I must say I totally dig you fans who say DM are not as good as in the old days…Ya know…
For example: I would LOVE to hear new Disintegration from THE CURE; YEAH RIGHT! disappointment square2.
HOWEVER, Depeche are the band who kick you in the eye (or ear) with every new record and it works and everyone’s happy and no one should ask for more cos’ it’s the last thing they’ll do
February 22nd, 2009 at 18:44
KeenMan, don’t complain about the “good ole days”… Depeche Mode is still around, and they are changing constantly with every album, and that is amazing. I mean, ANYONE can listen to DM. I’m 17, and I absolutely love them. Really, would you want them to never change? Yeah, 30 years of songs sounding like “Whats Your Name?” sounds AWESOME….
February 22nd, 2009 at 18:54
I don’t know why people here on HOME are always moaning,I will stop reading the comments here, how can be people still living in the past please open your mind freedom’s a state. Wrong is a kickass, great lyrics, great synths, catchy melody, WRONG is absolutly RIGHT. We people who liked it are happier than those who didn’t.
February 22nd, 2009 at 19:10
I have one question. When the official “Wrong” video clip appears on TV’s ? Tomorrow (February 23rd ?)
February 22nd, 2009 at 19:27
Good question, does anyone know when the offical video clip is going to be released?
February 22nd, 2009 at 20:10
Just listened to Wrong. MMMMM. Not quite strong enough for a single methinks. A good album track but still a pure DM track none the less. (alan or no alan!) Still, saving the pennies for the Deluxe……….. I want it for the demo’s.
February 22nd, 2009 at 20:57
I’ve watched this half a dozen time now…and it’s a definite grower for me, should be some good mixes knocking around. Sure it’s no Ets, but hey they’ve moved, at least their still willing to try something new and don’t stick with a formula. I can’t wait
February 22nd, 2009 at 21:05
..name one band that has survived the 80’s that still generate the hype that these guys have now in 2009? I’ve been a fan since 85 and this new single has a bit of old with new. Sure no band will ever sound like they did when they were at the peak, album sales will never be as good but these guys still sound as fresh as they did back in the days of MFM and Violator. This song is edgy, dark and it builds to its climax with moody synth sounds that make DM who they are. I can only hope the snippets of what we’ve heard live up to the promise. This is going to be their year!
February 22nd, 2009 at 21:38
Wrong is excellent, just can’t wait for the album and the tour.
February 23rd, 2009 at 1:54
the word wrong is kept on repeating but strong DM sound like SOFAD
February 23rd, 2009 at 2:49
WRONG doesn’t even have a chorus. It’s a chorus-less song. I really don’t get you people saying “it rocks”. Fans with partiality I think unable to make critics.
For the one who has been deleting comments: Since when do you follow Depeche Mode? Since SOFAD days is already late to me. Perhaps the only work you’ve been following and like is Playing the Angel, and perhaps you’re only 22 years old or something. Next time I state facts, with numbers, please leave my comment. Otherwise this proves how this site is beastialized with non-sense passion unable to swallow critics and unable to separate DM mistakes from rights.
February 23rd, 2009 at 3:24
I don’t care if it’s repetitive with no chorus. Techno mentality. Nothing wrong with the song; but if only DM had more balls to pull it off live erm LIVE?…I guess there’s been too much pressure with the world premiere and stuff…If only Dave could sing on stage like in the studio. Just a thought.
February 23rd, 2009 at 3:55
KeenMan, you think you are more fan or have the right to look down on opinions from people who discover Depeche Mode recently? I think you are WRONG!
February 23rd, 2009 at 5:03
I am totally in love with Wrong! How some of you can bitC# about it is beyond me, I mean what are you doing here? I don’t go to bands sites to moan. I have been with this band for twenty some years and what I like is that they have grown with me, part of my life in a way. This album from what I have heard of it is like a kick in the nuts! I love it!
February 23rd, 2009 at 6:16
Great Song!!!!!!!!
February 23rd, 2009 at 6:22
Why are people like keenman spending ther time on this site if they just want to bitch about DM. Go find another band!! This song rocks and proves that DM is one of the gretest bands ever
February 23rd, 2009 at 6:35
Why does everyone always hype Alan Wilder? Loved him when he was with DM but he left DM a long time ago. If it was not for the Dave, Mart, and Fletch, none of us would be having this debate. So Keenman, get your Violator CD and listen to the nine tracks all you want, while we mix it up with SOTU!!! BTW, I love the new song and luv all the true DM fans!!!
February 23rd, 2009 at 9:21
I dont think anyone is bi*%hing about the song or the band. Its just we are so used to supreme quality releases from DM that those of us who feel Wrong isnt as “strong” as their usual stuff are saying so. I still dont think its good enough for a single but is definately an album track. I have been a DM fan since 1981 and still get excited by a new release.
All hail the Mode!!!!!
February 23rd, 2009 at 10:50
WRONG IS SO DARK, SO GOOD !!!!
February 23rd, 2009 at 14:37
No one has mentioned the fact that they were miming at the Echo awards but ‘Wrong’ is still so right. I love it!! Bring on the o2
February 23rd, 2009 at 14:39
Oh, sorry Ivan B .. you kind of did mention it. I fail lol
February 23rd, 2009 at 14:43
the new videhttp://www.20min.ch/videotv/?channel_id=8&video_id=13163 sa-mi trag palme o for wrong is out
February 23rd, 2009 at 15:06
johny > What is it ? It’s official “Wrong” video ? Doesn’t like official… Where’s Dave,Martin or Andrew on clip???
February 23rd, 2009 at 15:17
Seen the Wrong video. Reminds me of Karma Police (Radiohead). Only more disturbing. Don’t know man. Looks like commercial suicide for DM. Is that good?
February 23rd, 2009 at 15:20
One thing what I can say. No Corbijn - no more DM spirit…
February 23rd, 2009 at 15:41
i like the video is something different wery well made and dm is i the video
February 23rd, 2009 at 23:40
The video is definitely rather disturbing - I wouldn’t let my four-year-old watch it!
One thing is for sure - it will get them noticed (assuming any networks have the courage to play it …)
DM are back, and they’re kicking ass! This feels like a catharsis - finally laying the ghost of Alan to rest, and rewarding us for our loyalty over the past three frankly disappointing albums.
Hurrah!
February 24th, 2009 at 0:16
I think this album is bound to be at the least a very good album. After all, some of the reviews that were posted prior to the Wrong release did not note as “Wrong” to be one of their best tracks. Like Dave said in of his interviews, I thinks this album is gonna have “quality”, I love “Wrong”!!!
February 24th, 2009 at 3:28
Again, I kind o disagree with Keenman on some points, but the fact that he didn’t like Wrong, that doesn’t mean that doesn’t love DM as much a we all do. Maybe he’s going to love some of the other songs on the album, it’s just that probably he had some great expectations of Wrong like I had myself. I’ve heard the song a few more times, and it’s definitely getting catchier after every listen. Anyway, we all are entitled to our own opinion, remember? it’s a forum people!
Long Live Depeche Mode
February 24th, 2009 at 5:22
Well, I have to agree with Keenman. Good song, but definitely not a strong single… However, it does get better with repeat listens. I just saw the video, though, and I have to say that I like the music video a lot more than the song itself.
Perhaps, the second single will be better, and Wrong is just to remind people that DM are back.
February 24th, 2009 at 14:28
Well going back to Dave interview, I just hope that they make People are People and Strange Love part of the tour track list this time. I know that they haven’t play live those two tracks at least on the last four tours. I think that at least one of then don’t like those songs a bit. For example believe it or not, Martin who wrote people are people has stated in interviews that he dislike that song so much that it’s hard to believe. I personally love those two classic songs
February 24th, 2009 at 16:19
I would like to hear People Are People. I mean, what’s more universal than People Are People?
Maybe Shame? Hope they’ll give us a surprise or two…
February 24th, 2009 at 16:58
bad typos there, I meant gore, gahan, eigner, and the production team do the work in terms of composing the actual music.
Fletcher is an old man who only remains a part of the band for financial reasons
February 24th, 2009 at 17:12
People are People live? A good song and heard it live before but they have so many other better songs to pull out of thier arsenal! Hard to chose Im sure. Its kind of like Radiohead playing Creep… not going to happen except on a rare occasion.
February 25th, 2009 at 17:00

February 26th, 2009 at 0:42
As a 40 something who has been into DM since 1981 and ‘New Life’ I can honestly say that ‘Wrong’ will stand the test of time. I can remember when ‘Stripped’ and ‘Never Let Me Down Again’ were first released people were saying similar things then…”not strong singles”…”not as good as old DM”…and look how loved and “classic” those two are these days. All I can say is the world is still a better place for any DM song, then a world without them.
February 28th, 2009 at 18:58
Wrong is one amazing song, thank God Depeche Mode and Massive Attack exist, God bless. This song blows anything that was made in the past 10 years!! wow, if the rest of the album is anything like this, then this is the masterpiece we’ve been waiting for. Can’t wait for the Phoenix and Seattle shows, I’ll be there!!
