HOME’s predictions for 2009 and beyond!
// 27.10.08 18:47 // Posted by Peter2 //
How time flies! We posted our first news story on the upcoming Mode album and tour back in July of 2007 - that’s 15 months ago now! Back then details were obviously very sketchy. We said a new album and tour could be announced roughly 12 months later. Fourteen months later, and the band announces a new album and tour. We were pretty damn close, and we had so much fun gazing into our magic 8-ball, we’re gonna try it again. But first a recap of what we know, so far:
Depeche Mode are currently busying themselves in the studio and are on schedule to finish the album before Christmas. The first single will hit radio in February ‘09, and the album is set for release on April 20th on Mute/EMI (April 21st in the US). At the time of writing 30 European shows for the months of May, June and July have been announced, with a few more being announced soon. At the recent press conference in Berlin the band revealed plans to hit North and South America later in 2009, but so far no dates have been made public.
That’s the condensed version of what we know right now. Now we venture into the unknown: HOME’s predictions for 2009 and beyond!
With the first leg of “Tour Of The Universe” wrapping in Portugal (or possibly Spain) in mid-July, they will probably hit North America later that month. They might kick off the North American leg at the Pemberton Festival in late July, before making their way down through California. Shows in the usual strongholds are a given - the Bay area and Gore’s adopted home town will be treated to tour stops - and two to four shows in the greater LA area - most likely the Staples Center in Los Angeles and the Honda Center in Anaheim in early August. The rest of the month will be spent touring the US and Canada, hitting New York for a couple of shows in late August.
With Europe and North America covered, the band will take a break for a few weeks, before taking the production further south, playing a combination of headliners and festivals in Mexico and South America. We’re liking the looks of the Mexican Moto Rokr and Brazilian TIM Festivals - both take place in October. A South American tour may sound like a massive undertaking, but recent comparable tours (Kylie, U2, Madonna, REM) have played on average around 6 shows there (not including Mexico), and they could be done by mid-October.
Then it’s back to Europe. Since it’s now late October, they will be hitting indoor arenas for decidedly smaller shows than the stadiums they played in the Summer. Apart from their most extensive tour of the British Isles in some 15 years, they will hit Germany, France, Benelux, Scandinavia, the Baltic states, Spain, Italy and Russia, before wrapping up the “Tour Of The Universe” in early 2010.
That’s as far as our reading of the tea leafs take us. We cannot stress strongly enough that these are our predictions, and they should not be taken as confirmation of anything. That being said, we’re looking forward to re-reading this in 2010. Good times are ahead.

I think I actually mentioned the Pemberton Festy. The first one was great fun so I would hope if they indeed do play there it will be massive. As long as the parking, travel and camping get fixed up, I cannot wait!

Can you start a thread on ideas about the sound of the new album? I haven’t seen anyone discuss the snippets or whatever people are calling them.
October 28th, 2008 at 17:37
Please come to Argentina! WE LOVE DM!!!
October 28th, 2008 at 17:48
If the new tour is really a “stadium tour”, in Mexico DM will play in Estadio Azteca, just like U2 played on their last tour. Nooooot Motorokr Fest. I went last week to this festival and it didn´t sell all the venue (Foro Sol capacity of 75,000 aprox.) And the Playing the Angel Tour SOLD OUT 2 times this venue.
So, this non-sense of Depeche Mode Playing in a Festival in Mexico is clearly a bad business for both, group and fans.

I sure as hell hope depeche mode doesnt play PEMBERTON FEST
as I hate music fetivals and depeche mode isnt big enough in the vancouver area so I wouldnt be surprised to see them skip vancouver all together on this up comming tour.

In the UK, a spectacular media campaign consisting of a quarter-page advert in the back of a music magazine and a telephone interview with Fletch on BBC Radio Scunthorpe will propel the album to the dizzying heights of #8, whereupon it will immediately fall out of the charts the very next week.
In other words, for the love of Dawkins will somebody at Mute/EMI actually throw their weight behind the band by getting them booked to perform on Later… or Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, greasing palms with the BFI for a Lifetime Achievement award from the Brits and actually promoting the band for once?
October 31st, 2008 at 2:09
